I recently did a photo shoot on 1930s Hollywood glamour. In the 1930s Hollywood glamour it was classy and the dresses that were worn were mainly satin slinky dresses that showed off the figure of the women. The dresses were all very different but from what i can tell they were made to make the lady’s look sexy. The make-up was quite simple apart from the shaped eyebrows and the vibrant lips. They occasionally had rosy cheeks and luscious eyelashes. The hair of the 1930s is coming back into fashion. It is wavy and the top of the hair is quite flat, the bottom of the hair is wavy and mostly thick. With longer hair is it more curly than wavy. In the 1930s money was sparse and they did what they could to earn it, movies were very popular and you can understand seeing all of the beautiful girls in them with these sexy dresses, it was only right that the fashion of Hollywood glamour would follow the same trend. There was lots of unemployment in the thirties and poverty spread women wanted to go for the fairy-tale world of Fred Astaire and ginger Rodgers.
Hollywood created the 1930s fashion, if you went to a department store there would be a copy-cat on sale. Vogue even commented on the long Hollywood dresses , they said 'You’ll look as thin as a reed and taller than ever, because of the long slip with its sudden flowering at the hem.'
The accessories were clips in the hair which had diamantes on them and looked very classy and expensive. They also had gold chocker’s which were very shiny and in those times gold was very expensive. The dresses had to be cut on the bias, which is where you put the pattern on the material on diagonally so that when it is made it drapes over the body perfectly, rather than making it on the non-bias and it just would hang on the lady.
In the 1930s fur coats were pretty popular too, you could get fur wraps and trims as well so that they would shadow the classy evening dresses, and you wouldn’t get too cold either.
One of the most influensive fashion designers at that time was Else Schiaparelli, she was Italian and her biggest rival was coco Chanel. She set up her own business in 1926 and by 1931 she added an evening wear collection and the business bloomed. She has designed for many films such as the French version of the 1933's Topase.
In conclusion it seems that the 1030s was a very hard time for most people but they still found time to watch movies and be inspired by that classy fashion that was shown and thought up by the likes of Else Schiaparelli. It went from the big screen to the high street stores in a matter of days. I could imagine how excited everyone was to get the latest Hollywood fashion but in budget.
